The role of the Trust Board is to take corporate responsibility for the organisation’s strategies and actions. The Chair and Non Executive Directors are lay people drawn from the local community and are accountable to the Secretary of State. The Chief Executive is responsible for ensuring that the Board is empowered to govern the organisation and to deliver its objectives. The Associate Directors attend Board meetings but do not have voting rights.
CHAIR - BEN REID
Ben Reid was appointed as Chairman in July 2004. Ben is Chief Executive of The Midcounties
Co-operative, a service sector company employing approximately 7,000 staff and with an annual turnover circa £650m. An accountant by profession, he is also Chair of Co-operativesUK Limited, the apex body for co-operatives and social enterprises, Chair of the Walsall Urban Regeneration Company and Chair of Business in the Community, Regional Leadership Team.
Ben has formerly held senior level positions with Lincolnshire Area Health Authority, Nottinghamshire Building Society and has been involved with the Learning Skills Council Locally. Ben also has extensive links with the business and regeneration communities in Walsall and the Black Country.
Sue James was appointed as Chief Executive in October 2003. She has worked in the NHS for over 30 years in posts in London, Leeds and South Yorkshire. Prior to her joining the Trust, Sue was Chief Executive at Barnsley District General Hospital from 1996 until 2000 when she joined the Trent Regional Office to lead on a number of organisational development initiatives designed to take forward the NHS Modernisation agenda. She was then invited to lead the national HR work supporting the restructuring of the NHS to deliver the Shifting the Balance of Power.
Sue joined the NHS Modernisation Agency in 2002 as part of a national team which supported zero starred trusts in developing their services. Sue chairs the Graduate Training Scheme steering group for the West Midlands and is an enthusiastic advocate of leadership development as a major change agent in the NHS. Sue is married with two adult children.
Shahana Khan joined the Trust on 30 July 2007. She qualified as an accountant at the age of 23 as part of the Ministry of Defence's fast track scheme. After leaving the Ministry of Defence she became Chief Financial Officer of an international software company.
She joined the NHS in 1991 and worked for several acute Trusts in various senior positions before being appointed Deputy Finance Director at Heart of England NHS Trust.
Shahana is an assessor for the National NHS Graduate Training Scheme and has always viewed the finance function as an integral part of delivering the objectives of an organisation.
Mike Browne attended Guys Medical School and qualified in 1976. Following this he held various training posts in Hastings, Zimbabwe, Plymouth, Bristol, London and Leicester. He was the Doctor in Charge of a Government District General Hospital on the Tanzania/Rwanda border for a year. He became a consultant in obstetrics and gynaecology in Walsall in 1987 and has particular interests in infertility and laparoscopic surgery.
Mike became Medical Manager in 1997 and was appointed as the Trust's Medical Director in August 2001. Mike has an interest in reducing hospital mortality rates and increasing safety in hospitals.
CHIEF OPERATING OFFICER/NURSE DIRECTOR - BRIGID STACEY
Brigid Stacey joined the Trust in September 2006 as Chief Operating Officer/Nurse Director. Brigid qualified as a Registered General Nurse in 1989 in the North West. Once she qualified, she moved to St Bartholomew’s Hospital, London and quickly specialised in the field of Oncology/Haematology.
She worked in a variety of clinical roles but in 1994, she became one of the first Nurse Practitioners in NE Thames at Basildon Hospital.
During her time at Basildon, she moved into nurse management and in 2000 joined Luton & Dunstable Hospital as Director of Nursing and Midwifery. Whilst at Luton and Dunstable she undertook several roles including SHA lead nurse and Project Director for NHS Foundation Trust.
Her keen interest is in the quality of care we deliver to patients in a safe environment. She has a strong operational background and is very excited about joining the Trust as Chief Operating Officer/Nurse Director.
In her free time Brigid enjoys travelling and spending time with her young children, Jessica 2 and Rebecca 8.
